The meaning of perseverance

Perseverance is one of the most critical ingredients for success. It is the ability to keep pushing forward, even when faced with obstacles, setbacks, and failures. As Julie Andrews quotes, “Perseverance is failing 19 times and succeeding the 20th.”  You are not always going to succeed on the first try, but if you really want to succeed, you have to work past your failures and keep working until you can reach your goal.

Perseverance is an art of practice, patience, and determination. It means staying committed to your goals and never giving up, even when the road ahead seems long and difficult. A study published in the journal Emotion found that people who are able to persist in pursuing their goals are more likely to experience positive emotions, such as joy and pride. The researchers suggest that this may be because perseverance leads to a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of pride in one’s achievements.

Perseverance is not just for the famous and successful; it is something that anyone can cultivate. Individuals who believe perseverance is a trait that one can develop with practice, and those who consistently practise it over time are more likely to evolve and strengthen it. Research suggests that this belief may lead individuals to adopt a growth mindset.

Why Perseverance Matters

As professionals, we must develop and nurture perseverance to achieve our objectives. The words of Calvin Coolidge, “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence,” emphasise the importance of perseverance in achieving success. Perseverance and determination are greater than talent, genius, or education.

People who possess the character strength of perseverance are more likely to achieve their goals and experience greater life satisfaction. The legend Mahatma Gandhi’s journey to success was marked by an unwavering commitment to his cause, despite facing numerous setbacks and obstacles, which is a testament to the power of perseverance and determination.

Essential Traits to Cultivate Perseverance 

Perseverance starts with a well-defined goal and a thought-out plan to achieve it. It requires discipline, dedication, and a positive mindset to stick to that plan even when it gets tough. Perseverance also means being adaptable and flexible, willing to change course when necessary but never giving up on the ultimate goal. 

Persevering individuals are passionate about what they do and are more likely to stay committed to their objectives and work through difficult times. 


Discipline contributes to perseverance. It is the practice of adhering to a set of rules or guidelines designed to achieve a specific goal. Discipline requires a focused and intentional effort to maintain a particular course of action, even when faced with challenges or obstacles.

Individuals who exhibit discipline and tenacity are more likely to persevere in the face of adversity. Tenacious individuals have high self-control and can resist temptations and distractions that may hinder their progress towards their goals.
