The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), a consortium of 85 Universities in 35 African Countries, is pleased to announce the 2018 RUFORUM Young African Entrepreneurs Competition (RUYAEC). The overall purpose of the RUFORUM Young African Entrepreneurs Competition (RUYAEC) is to catalyse entrepreneurship through promotion of business innovation and provision of seed funding to young entrepreneurs with creative and innovative business ideas among African youth. RUYAEC, through an online application, invites young African entrepreneurs and incubates below 35 years of age to compete for 20 awards that show case their innovations, enterprises, business concepts and propositions.
The inaugural RUFORUM young innovators award took place in 2016 and 15 young African innovators from 12 countries across the continent were rewarded during the 5th Higher Education Week and RUFORUM biennial conference which took place in Cape town, South Africa. The competition attracted a total of 756 applicants from 38 African countries.
This year, the number of awards has increased by five in broad fields that include Agribusiness, Incubations, Business enterprises, ICTs, Health, Engineering, Natural resources and Meteorology, among others. The RUYAEC operates within one of RUFORUM’s values and principles of creativity, and seeks to offer opportunities to youths to develop innovative solutions for addressing especially the problems faced by smallholder farmers and rural households, and spurring innovations and business development.
