African Journal of Rural Development publishes inaugural issues

The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) is pleased to announce publication of the first two issues of the   African Journal of Rural Development, AJRD. AJRD is an online, bilingual (English/French), peer-reviewed, open access journal whose aim is to share knowledge on all aspects that contribute to sustainable and inclusive rural development.  With its broad scope of bridging the biological, physical and social sciences, this journal aims to address issues that will enable Africa’s rural areas to be a major contributor to meeting the ambitious aspirations of the African Agenda 2063.

The journal will document case studies of researchers working with farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs to increase productivity and encourage greater uptake of new technologies. It will also address the institutional systems and skill mix that universities and other actors  need to strengthen their academic programmes in order to produce graduates and research that increases agricultural productivity and profitability, facilitates change processes at community level, informs policy, hence leading to sustainable and inclusive rural development.

Community engagement, higher education instruction and rainwater harvesting are some of the topics explored in the first issue of the journal while the second issue focuses on the role of higher education in Africa’s development.

Founding of the Journal was inspired by on-going efforts of African universities, under the auspices of RUFORUM, to deepen engagement in rural transformation efforts on the continent. While officially launching the Journal in 2014, Hon. Thoko Didiza, the former South African Minister of Agriculture said that, “Access to land, technology, information, credit, infrastructure, market research and extension services are key for the success of Agriculture in Africa.” She added that with only 0.7% of the global research output coming from Africa, a lot has to be done by Africa’s scholars to add value to the continent.

AJRD welcomes submission of manuscripts for subsequent editions of the Journal. Manuscripts are accepted on a rolling basis and will normally be published in the next edition following acceptance.
