Dr. Sadik Kassim is one of the pioneer graduates of RUFORUM’s Regional PhD in Plant Breeding and Biotechnology run at Makerere University. He is currently the Director of Research at Abi Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Abi ZARDI) one of Uganda’s Public Agricultural Research Institutes (PARIs) under National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO).
He serves as the Chief Executive of the institute providing professional, technical and administrative guidance to the institute’s staff as well as conducting/supervising scientific research in line with the mandate of NARO, “to generate and disseminate appropriate, safe and cost effective technologies”. Abi ZARDI covers an agro-ecologically diverse and geographically strategic region of Uganda known as West Nile Agro-Ecological Zone comprising 8 districts including Arua, Nebbi, Zombo, Maracha, Koboko, Yumbe, Moyo and Adjumani.
Due to its diverse micro agro-ecologies and long porous border with Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and South Sudan there are overwhelming existing and emerging challenges requiring innovative research solutions. Thus Dr. Kassim’s overriding role is mobilizing resources; funds, infrastructure, partners and research collaborators to enhance the institute’s ability to address the region’s Agricultural research needs and specifically contribute to the improvement of livelihood of over 2,661,000 people and sustainable development.
