About the Call / Scholarship
This is to announce a call for applications for research scholarships to support the finalization of PhD research, data analysis, thesis write up, publication and dissemination of findings. Scholarships will be awarded to candidates registered in the Regional Programmes as listed below and are finalizing their studies. The purpose of these scholarships is to support students who do not have adequate finances to complete their degree studies and research work. The scholarship also aims at enabling the students to discuss their results with the communities they worked with. The call is open to students registered in any one of the following RUFORUM Regional PhD programmes.


Applicants should be registered at one of the RUFORUM supported Regional PhD Programmes and should have finished/finalizing their coursework. If applicants have not yet completed their coursework by the deadline then a support letter from their supervisor must be given, that indicates the progress and why funding should be given before completion of coursework. The eligible RUFORUM Regional PhD Programmes are;

  1. Dryland Resource Management, University of Nairobi, Kenya
  2. Plant Breeding and Biotechnology, Makerere University, Uganda
  3. Aquaculture and Fisheries Science, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and
    Natural Resources Management, Malawi
  4. Agricultural and Resource Economics, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and
    Natural Resources Management, Malawi
  5. Agricultural and Rural Innovation, Makerere, Uganda
  6. Agricultural Rural Innovations, Egerton University, Kenya
  7. Food Science and Human Nutrition, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology

Application package

Eligible applicants are required to work with their supervisor(s) to submit their documentation, which should include:

  1. A proposal indicating progress and what remains to be done; a clear work plan/activities and a budget for finalizing the thesis and disseminating the research findings.
  2. Official evidence of coursework having been completed and passed (where applicable)
  3. Letters of support for the application from supervisor and preferably endorsed by the Dean of Faculty/School where the applicant is registered, indicating student study and research progress to date, and what remains to be done.

Criteria for selection
The following criteria will apply;

  1. Evidence of having successfully completed coursework, where applicable
  2. Evidence of research so far done and clear indication of what remains to be done
  3. Appropriateness/relevance and contribution to RUFORUM objectives
  4. A clear outline of the publications to be produced and the dissemination strategy to communities, academia and, where appropriate, to service agencies, partners and policy-makers. This should include the thesis and at least 2 articles in a refereed journal and various pamphlets, policy briefs and feedback workshops, as appropriate.
  5. A support letter from your supervisor, and preferably endorsed by the Dean, indicating that your studies are on track and that they expect you to complete within one year of receipt of funding.

Female students are especially encouraged to apply.

The Award

The scholarships are for a maximum of US$15,000 over a period of two years, and are meant to provide funds for student research ($10,000), Students travel ($1,000); Conference Participation ($2,300); Students supervision ($1,000); Thesis Publication ($200); Journal Paper Publication ($500).

Scholarship Award Process

Scholarship letters will be prepared for each successful applicant and sent to the Dean of the respective University Faculty/School. The Scholarship award letter specifies the amount of the scholarship, purpose and responsibility of the university in monitoring the use of the grant funds and reporting requirements. Funds are only disbursed after full commitment, through signature by the respective Dean and supervisor(s). Scholarships awarded are published in the RUFORUM Newsletter and are posted in the RUFORUM website.
Student Mentorship
The supervisors are expected to mentor their students and will receive an acknowledgement fee after the thesis has been examined, the publication or acceptance of at least one paper in a referred journal.
Reporting requirements
The student, through the supervisor will be required to submit a progress report after six months and then a completion report at the end of twelve months. When applying for the final payment the supervisor(s) is required to submit an electronic copy of the student’s thesis and publications, including pamphlets and briefs, to RUFORUM Secretariat for uploading on the RUFORUM website. RUFORUM agrees to hold posting of the dissertations until papers have been accepted by journals.
Time frame
The foreseen time frame for the award process is as follows:

  1. The deadline for receiving applications at RUFORUM Secretariat is 30th September 2015, 5.00 pm Uganda time.
  2. Administrative check/compliance review and feedback to applicants by 15th October 2015.
  3. Accepted proposals sent out for review by Technical Committee by 20th October 2015
  4. Review of Proposals by Technical Committee and selection completed by 20th November 2015
  5. Successful applicants informed electronically by 25th November 2015.
  6. RUFORUM Secretariat sends out Scholarship Award letters by 30th November 2015
    scholarships funds disbursed by 15th December 2015.

What to do if you have forgotten your password or need to reset your password

  3. You will be asked to enter your email address and then click reset password
  4. The link to enable you reset your password will be sent to your email address. Please also check for this link in your spam folder in case it is delivered to your spam. Follow the instructions to reset your password
  5. Use your email and the new password to log into RIMS
